On track with European climate targets

LDCwood is carbon neutral

As part of the Paris Agreement, 195 parties committed to keeping the rise in the global average temperature to well within 2°C above the pre-industrial level and continuing their efforts to contain the rise in temperature to 1.5°C.

To achieve this goal, we must reduce the global greenhouse gas emissions as quickly as possible and reach a balance between anthropogenic emissions and removals (i.e., carbon neutrality) by the second half of this century.

The independent climate consulting agency CO2logic and certification body Vinçotte have made an analysis of our carbon emissions scope 1+2, as well as a significant part of the relevant scope 3 emissions, i.e., commuting, business travel, waste processing, paper procurement, and indirect scope 1+2 emissions.

Our efforts in recent years to limit our ecological impact in recent years will earn us carbon-neutral certification in 2021. We offset our unavoidable residual emissions by supporting two CO2logic-certified climate projects.

International ThermoWood Association

LDCwood is a member of the International ThermoWood Association. This means that we can display the ThermoWood® trademark and disseminate the underlying method, which was developed in Finland. The thermally treated wood that is produced by LDCwood may thus also actually bear the name ThermoWood®.

The International ThermoWood Association was founded in 2000, and its objective is to promote the use of ThermoWood®. The members thus work together with the association in order to both guarantee quality and do further research on the use of thermally treated wood. LDCwood bears this quality label and guarantees the best quality for the various ThermoWood® products.

Technical certificates

In collaboration with wood.be and Professor Christian Brischke of the Georg-August-Universität in Göttingen (Germany), specific tests are currently being performed in order to obtain additional technical certificates. These tests check the hardness, water absorption, stability, density and more, and are an extra quality label for our ThermoWood® .

Thermo Ayous – Durability class I

LDCwood is OLB-certified

For the last 20 years, illegally purchased wood has represented a major issue regarding both private and public wood supplying policies. As a result, since 2000, Governmental and Intergovernmental Organisations decided to consider the situation as a real threat and set up strict measures to find a solution for non acceptable practices.
The OLB system (Origine et Légalité des Bois in French, which may be translated as Timber Origin and Legality) was developed in 2004 by EuroCertiFor to meet our clients demand for an official third party certificate regarding their wood products legality.

The certification of wood processing and trading companies is based on the respect of the chain of custody standard. This document describes the requirements to meet to be entitled to sell OLB certified wood and to use the OLB trademark on companies products.

OLB, an international system based on:

  • A strict and true legality
  • Traceability requirements adapted to forest companies
  • A simple, though efficient, follow up of wood products (chain of custody)

Frequently Asked Questions

1/What is ThermoWood®? Can you give more information about the process?

ThermoWood® is the result of the thermal modification of wood to a higher durability class. Thermal modification is a controlled pyrolysis process, whereby the wood is heated (>215°C) in a low-oxygen environment in order to enlarge the durability class of the wood. Negative characteristics of wood such as fungal growth, moisture problems, degradation due to insects, expansion and shrinkage, etc. are reduced to a minimum or even fully eliminated thanks to this process.

2/Where is the company established?

LDCwood has its own production site in Ostend, Belgium.

3/To which types of wood does the ThermoWood® process apply?

In principle, the method can be applied to every type of wood. Initially LDCwood is focusing only on the production of ayous and fraké – wood types from Cameroon, West Africa –, ash and pinewood.

4/Do you have a product certification?

Not at present. In the meantime the procedure has been initiated in collaboration with WOOD.be in order to obtain a product certificate. Therefore tests are currently being carried out at the University of Göttingen.

5/What is the added value of the International ThermoWood Association?

The objective of the International ThermoWood Association is to promote the use of ThermoWood®. Together with the members the association seeks both to guarantee quality and to do further research on the use of thermally treated wood. These members undergo an annual inspection where the quality and proper compliance with the process are checked. In this way the quality of ThermoWood® is guaranteed. Thanks to the International ThermoWood Association, all products sold under the ThermoWood® trademark possess a technical and ecological quality guarantee.

6/Is it necessary to maintain ThermoWood® products? If so, how often? And what are the differences in maintenance compared to standard wood?

Every product that is applied in an outdoor environment requires maintenance. And although some products simply cannot be maintained, wood can still look the same even after many years thanks to easy maintenance.

ThermoWood® was already thermally treated once, and can therefore already count on more benefits than normal or untreated wood. For example, with ThermoWood® you will encounter fewer problems with insects (holes), fungal growth, decay, expansion, etc.  Maintenance of ThermoWood® is thus recommended, but is required with less frequent regularity than with untreated wood.

The regularity with which maintenance is required, depends on the exposure to UV rays, the general weather conditions or the colour of the wood (more pigment means less maintenance). We can stain your ThermoWood® colourless or black at your request.

7/What happens if maintenance or the surface treatment is not done?

If ThermoWood® is not maintained, the wood can crack on the surface or the colour can turn grey due to exposure to UV rays. Yet the lack of maintenance has no effect on the positive characteristics that are the result of the ThermoWood® treatment.

8/In which zones can ThermoWood® products be applied?

Depending on the type of wood, the following applications are possible:

– (Facade) covering
– Terrace
– Around swimming pool
– Sun protections
– Flower box
– Parts of doors and windows
– Pergola
– Balustrade and fence
– Parts of garden
– Garden furniture
– Bench

– Parquet and solid floors
– Solid doors
– Panels or partition walls
– Wall or roof covering
– Furniture
– Windows and doors
– Sauna cladding and furniture
– Furniture for bathroom and kitchen
– Other: wooden toys or souvenirs and instruments

9/How do I have to maintain my ThermoWood® product?

Before you begin any treatment, we recommend washing off all dirt. Afterwards you can simply apply varnish/oil with the use of a brush or roller. For all of the information about maintenance and the cost thereof, please contact our representative.

10/Do you also export to other countries?

Until now, ThermoWood® could only be imported from other countries. As the first Belgian producer of ThermoWood®, LDCwood will serve the European market.

11/Why prefer ThermoWood®?

1. Technical specifications:

  • Risk of warping and expansion is minimised
  • No decay or degradation
  • Increased durability
  • Thermal insulation is substantially increased
  • Homogeneous colour
  • Strong and long-lasting in all weather conditions
  • Easy to treat

2. Other specifications:

  • Appearance and design of wood
  • Produced from legally managed forests (European Timber Regulation)
  • Production process without use of chemicals
  • 100% natural
  • Economical
  • Healthy

12/Does your products contain chemicals?

Our ThermoWood® products are 100% natural and contain no chemicals. The thermal treatment only uses heat, steam and water.

13/Can our ThermoWood® application also be installed by LDCwood?

14/Can the ThermoWood® be ordered in any dimensions, or do you only deliver standard sizes?

At your request, ThermoWood® can be processed into a profile chosen by you.

15/Can the thermal treatment also be applied to other types of wood?

Yes, that is possible. Initially we are focusing on thermally modifying ayous, ash, fraké and pinewood. Other types of wood may be added to our range in a later phase.

16/Do you have your own stock?

Yes. That is precisely why we can respond quickly to the demand of the customer and reduce the delivery period.

17/How many ovens do you have? And what is their capacity?

We have two ovens of 40m2 each.

18/What is the maximum thickness of ThermoWood®?
