Community centre Ter Willer

Bilzen, Belgium

In the village of Waltwilder, Bilzen, a modern community center of over 550 square meters was built next to the recently renovated old rectory.

Wood type: LDCwood® ThermoWood®  Ayous

Durability class: 1

Year: 2022

This architectural masterpiece, aptly named Ter Willer (derived from the local dialect for Waltwilder), is a showpiece for Bilzen. The new hall will provide a significant boost to the cultural and social life in Waltwilder and beyond.

Fire-Retardant ThermoWood® Ayous

For the cladding of the new event hall, LDCwood® ThermoWood® ayous was chosen, which has been treated with Burnblock® to achieve the required fire reaction class.

The fire-retardant treatment with Burnblock® is carried out under pressure in our autoclave. The fire retardant is 100% natural and biodegradable. Moreover, the product is Cradle-to-Cradle™ Gold certified. The fire-retardant treatment ensures the maintenance of the fire reaction class over time, so no re-treatment is necessary.

Durability Class 1

Naturally, ayous is not a durable wood species, but thanks to the thermal modification by LDCwood® in Ostend, this tropical softwood becomes resistant to weather influences and achieves durability class 1. After treatment, the wood has a soft brown color and warm appearance that will gradually turn into a beautiful uniform grey.

LDCwood® guarantees sustainable wood; we only modify wood from sustainably managed forests.
