This contemporary school building serves as the new location for the existing Koningin Astrid nursery and primary school, Atheneum Karel Buls, and Mutsaard nursery.

The design team prioritized architectural enhancements to elevate the educational quality and overall school experience, with a special focus on creating outdoor spaces that go beyond the typical playground.

Fire retardant ThermoWood^® pine

To augment the outdoor areas' natural appeal, they selected LDCwood^® ThermoWood^® pine for the facade's cladding. This material, thermally modified, offers a durability class 1 and high dimensional stability.

School buildings are subject to strict fire safety regulations. Lemahieu Fire Protection^® applied the fire retardant Burnblock^® to ThermoWood^® pine, achieving the necessary fire reaction classification.

In 2018, this project won the Be.exemplary Award, an annual recognition for projects that contribute to quality urban development and improve the living conditions within the Brussels Capital Region.
